Job Description:

New employees are mandated to either provide proof of their COVID vaccination or to receive the vaccine, either through PHC or their own provider, with the first dose of a series required before the first day of employment. Exception to this mandate will be considered for those with a medical or religious exemption.


Summary: The Perinatal Health Educator/Lactation Specialist is responsible for providing education,
counseling and support for OB patients and their families.

Areas of Responsibility:
• Counseling patients in smoking cessation, dental health, parenting skills, breastfeeding, the basics of
labor and delivery, infant care, birth control
• Teaching classes in group settings such as CPR class, car seat safety, prenatal exercise, labor and
delivery preparation, birth control, infant growth and development and basic parenting skills
• Coordinating hospital tours for expecting parents
• Postpartum education and care management in the hospital setting, including data entry of delivery
statistics and basic newborn information
• Assists patients with the completion of enrollment forms for WIC, disability, breast pump programs,
and any additional applicable programs
• Counsels patients and seeks appropriate referrals for assistance with domestic violence, mental
health, access to emergency food and/or shelter
• Effectively communicates with OB Case Manager and other members of the health care team

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty
satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability

Experience and Skills:

• Bachelor’s degree preferred
• One year of perinatal care and/ or education experience preferred
• One to three years of experience teaching in both individual and group settings
• Electronic Medical Records experience preferred

Desired Skills:
• Knowledge of local educational resources, such as breast feeding, nutrition and parenting
• Knowledge of various health services throughout the community
• Knowledge of basic medical and perinatal terminology, procedures, and symptoms

Licenses and Certifications:
• Lactation Education Certification required
• Certification of training of CPSP preferred
• IBCLC certification preferred; will consider a certificate in progress
• Valid CA Driver’s License

Language Skills: Good written and verbal communication skills in Spanish and English
