Job Description:

New employees are mandated to either provide proof of their COVID vaccination or to receive the vaccine, either through PHC or their own provider, with the first dose of a series required before the first day of employment. Exception to this mandate will be considered for those with a medical or religious exemption.

 Summary: The Medical Assistant 1 ensures optimum patient care through the efficient rooming of patients, exhibiting good communication with patients and other staff, performing medical procedures, providing patient education, follow-up care instructions, and completing daily documentation.

Areas of Responsibility:

Patient Care:

  • Functions independently, under supervision, in the role of Medical Assistant 1 on the team
  • Rooms patients, obtains and documents vital signs including height, weight, BMI Temperature, respirations and blood pressure
  • Collects and documents patient history and current state of health
  • Prepares treatment rooms, equipment and supplies in a timely manner to ensure optimum flow
  • Provides patient education and follow-up care instructions
  • Performs panel management and non-visit tasks as assigned by Provider or Nurse
  • Works closely with providers to provide high quality care to each patient by addressing their health needs and concerns
  • Provides basic Medical Assistant services to obstetric patients

 Communication:

  • Builds relationships with patients, staff and providers to ensure excellent customer service
  • Communicates clearly with providers, other staff and patients to promote optimum clinic flow
  • Good verbal and written communication skills with demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively at all levels
  • Communicates to Team Manager any urgent issues that arise
  • Recommends improvement in processes and practices through the proper channels
  • Takes accurate messages and responds in a timely manner
  • Acts in support of the Flow Coordinator to maintain effective patient flow

Medical Procedures:

  • Follows PHC policies and procedures in accordance with the Medical Assistant position
  • Performs routine screening procedures, such as hearing and vision test and document findings
  • Performs various medical assistant procedures, including but not limited to: finger sticks for hemoglobin checks; ear washes; nebulizer treatments; urine dipsticks; specimen collection for throat and/or urine cultures; wound cleaning; PPD placement; INR; glucose; HCG; and Hemoglobin A1C
  • Administers immunizations and documents in ECW & CAIR.

Documentation:

  • Ensures that all logs, forms, records and charts are complete, thorough and accurate
  • Documents freezer & refrigerator temperature and takes appropriate action to maintain correct temperatures
  • Practices standard safety precautions to ensure safety to self, other staff and patients, including handling of contained waste and sharps, and cleaning the Ultrasound machine & EKG machine.

Experience and Skills:

QualificationsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. 

Education/Experience:

  • Satisfactory completion of an accredited medical assistant program in California, or documented equivalent training in a physician’s office (at minimum, training must conform to the state’s program of California Medical Assistant Regulations BPC 1366.1-1366.4)
  • Entry level position up to one year of experience preferred

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Completed Medical Assistant Certificate from an accredited organization (Medical Assistant Program/School) is required
  • State MA Certification preferred, but not required. If certified, must be current and maintain competency
  • Injection certifications and or competency
  • Must have current BLS certification
  • Candidate must be able to successfully meet PHC’s credentialing and privileging requirements

 Language Skills: Ability to communicate effectively in English and Spanish with children and adults in person, on the telephone, and in writing. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions and request from patients, co-workers, and others as necessary.

 Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

 Reasoning Ability: Ability to recognize problems, collect data, and establish facts.

 Computer Skills: Computer literate and proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel and Outlook), electronic medical records and use of a web browser.
