Job Description:

Summary:  The Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) is responsible for the delivery of oral hygiene and appropriate preventative services to the patients of the practice as directed by the dentist.


Areas of Responsibility:


  • Sterilize and disinfect instruments and equipment.
  • Expose, develop, and mount dental radiographs.
  • Assist the dentist during examinations
  • Conduct work in compliance with office policies and procedures, safety, and OSHA guidelines.
  • Record medical and dental histories and vital signs of patient.
  • Assist in the oral health management of patients of the practice
  • Obtain and document baseline oral hygiene assessment data
  • Provide oral health education and counseling for all patients of the practice
  • Work towards the integration of appropriate dental hygiene care with other health care professional involved in the patients’ health care management
  • Receive and places necessary telephone calls consistent with professional matters, clinical business, and patient care as related to the practice
  • Counsel patients on nutrition as related to oral hygiene
  • Keeps thorough and timely electronic patient records and other visit documentation
  • Participate in the achievement of patient satisfaction and office production goals by working efficiently and providing a high level of patient service
  • Assist with other duties as directed from the Dental Board of CA Permitted Duties


Non -clinical:

  • Performs office management tasks that require the use of a personal computer
  • Performs and keeps office records related to Equipment maintenance (daily, monthly, quarterly and yearly)
  • Communicates and coordinates equipment repairs
  • Keeps Inventory control
  • Proficient with dental software programs, dental equipment and technology
  • Participates actively in staff meetings
  • Conducts work in compliance with office policies and procedures, safety, OSHA, MSDS guidelines and the Dental Board of CA and COMDA
  • Assists with other duties as directed

Experience and Skills:

Qualifications:  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. 



  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Associate degree from accredited Dental Hygiene Education Program
  • Licensed to practice as RDH in the state of CA
  • Two years of recent experience as an RDH preferred

Licenses and Certifications:

  • RDH Certificate
  • License to practice in California
  • CPR certification
  • Candidate must be able to successfully meet PHC’s credentialing and privileging requirements.


Language Skills: English, both written and verbal is required.  Bilingual in English and Spanish, both written and verbal preferred.


Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.


Reasoning Ability:  Ability to recognize problems, collect data and establish facts.


Computer Skills:  MS Office (Word, Excel and Outlook), web applications, electronic dental records.
